If you want to prevent other people from going through your private files, you should do something to protect your data. Marking a folder as hidden, on its Properties window, can prove to be ineffective, because it is not difficult to reveal hidden folders. If you hide your folders with Private Folder, they will stay hidden, even if Windows is set to show hidden data. The software can also lock your folders and protect them with a password.

Private Folder is free and it works on 32 and 64-bit variants of Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. The setup package is less than one MB and you will spend only a few seconds installing the application on your computer. There are no special requirements to meet, so yo can run Private Folder right away, once the installation is complete.

The software allows you to target one or more folders, by adding them to a list, on its compact interface. Folders are added one at a time, because you have to specify a protection rule as well. Besides selecting a folder, on a separate window, you may also click a few check boxes, to hide the folder or lock it. If you opt for the Lock option, the application will let you decide whether to create a password or not.

The selected folders are listed on the main interface, with their protection methods and their current statuses. You can enable or disable the protection feature for individual folders or all items at once. You just need to select them and click a button, on the right side of the window. The software will lock or hide your folders automatically, if you don't access their files for a certain time period. You can define the period yourself, in minutes, on the lower part of the interface.

If you attempt to access a password protected folder, the software will prompt you for the password, even if it is not running. If the folder is locked, without a password, Windows will display an "Access is denied" error message. As previously mentioned, it is impossible to reveal folders which are hidden by Private Folder, even if you set the operating system to show hidden files and folders.

Pros

You can instantly hide or lock any number of folders. Rules are defined just by clicking a few check boxes and typing a password. Hidden folders will stay hidden, in any situation, and locked folders are rendered inaccessible.

Cons

There is no option for creating a master password, to block access to Private Folder interface. If you are concerned about your privacy, you can use Private Folder's simple, but effective features to protect your important files right away.
